An interesting project came through our studio recently; a lovely couple were referred to us who wanted two heraldic shields (as gifts for their children) to match one that was made for them 50 years ago in Switzerland. It’s an extremely well made little jewel of a piece which is acid etched on blue flashed mouth blown glass, painted, enamelled, stained, kiln fired. I particularly like the depiction of the moon with its slightly melancholy face!  We have done quite a bit of heraldry over the years, it’s always interesting when a client has researched their history and has a coat of arms  as part of their heritage. Back in the UK we restored quite intricate 19th and 20th century heraldic shields which had been extensively damaged, we recreated and repainted missing sections to match the original fragments so that the old and new blended perfectly. A couple of favourites were the King George the Fifth shield and the multiple shields that made up the paternal arms of the Marchioness of Bute (1855); she was clearly very proud of her lineage.
