Restoration

As some of you may remember, I’ve discussed previously about how restoration can sometimes be as much forensic as artistic; the need to ascertain exactly how a piece was originally painted in order to recreate it as accurately as possible. In the case of these windows the challenge was to identify the causes of the excessive bowing in what are relatively young 60 year old windows and rectify both the cause and effect.  We identified several factors that contributed to the deterioration; the windows had not been originally installed with the correct support for the weight, nor been correctly installed within the casements. The original fabrication was not to a high standard and areas of very thick glass were pushing out of the flanges of the lead.
Here is John working on re-leading one of the three windows that we currently have in the studio, it’s a good thing that he is an awesome problem solver!
