We were contacted by the owners of a beautiful Shaughnessy home to create a feature piece in a wall cabinet. They were renovating the kitchen and wanted to add a special focal point for extra zeal.

When we measured the cabinet, we were surprised to find that it was eight panels and would be over 22 square feet of glass! They wanted the artwork to be special and have real impact. We decided to find inspiration in the Arts & Crafts era, particularly Rennie Mackintosh work to co-ordinate with the furniture pieces already in the home.

The owners also wanted to maintain a contemporary feel so I developed one image that would encircle the cabinet in a continuous design. Once they approved the image, we went to work. Paint techniques were used in strategic places to strengthen the visual “flow” of the lead lines, with unique leaf forms etched into the green flashed glass. This blend of colour is only possible using mouth-blown glass, in this case brought in from France.

The design included smaller inlays used in other cabinetry in the kitchen and formal dining room, bringing together the elegant designs in the new cabinet centre-piece. The owners are delighted with the result!
